The Holiday Season is in full swing, and children all across the world are likely waking up to presents covered in everyone’s favorite Pokemon mascot, Pikachu. However, the image often used for Pikachu nowadays doesn’t quite match up with some of the older fans might remember the little lightning rodent looking like back in 1996 when Pokemon Red and Blue were released, or 1998 for stateside fans. Many speculated on why Pikachu changed so much from then to now, but last year Lead Pokemon Designer Ken Sugimori shared the rather practical explanation for the Pokemon’s weight loss with Yomiuri Newspaper....

High on Life is the latest game by the Rick and Morty creator, Justin Roiland, and his team at Squanch Games. It’s a colorful first-person shooter, clearly comfortable in its own brightly lit and alien aesthetic. However, it’s a surprisingly taxing game. Built in Unreal Engine 4, the game has few graphical options beyond the typical. Sure, you can turn off the motion blur (always do this), which is good. But one graphical technique you can’t remove in the options menu is chromatic aberration....

Data from a new Fortnite patch has suggested that its PvE mode, Daybreak, may arrive soon. According to a Eurogamer report, files found in Fortnite patch 16.40 describe a fight for survival as dangerous creatures flood the island at night. Daybreak mode appears to have been in development for some time, which means that it may join the battle royale any day now. As the mode’s description notes, players wake up on the Fortnite island “alone and unarmed” with a bad case of memory loss....

Developer Playground Games has shown off the full Mexico-inspired map you’ll be racing around in the upcoming Forza Horizon 5. The reveal was part of this week’s Forza Let’s ¡Go! broadcast. As creative director on the game Mike Brown lets us know, the map is 50% bigger than that of Forza Horizon 4. Among its many distinguishing features include the longest highway seen yet in a Forza Horizon game, as well as the previously revealed volcano....

Surprising literally no-one, my Game of the Year is Elden Ring. It exceeded my Erdtree-sized expectations and, despite some absolute corkers being released this year, nothing else came close. The games that made me happiest, on the other hand, are games I’ve hardly played, if at all. Pokémon Legends Arceus and Scarlet brought me more joy than all the Elden Rings and Immortalities and Marvel Snaps put together. I’m not a player of these games....

Today Genshin Impact developer HoYoverse revealed a new character for its popular online action RPG Genshin Impact. The new character is named Shikanoin Heizou. He’s defined as “Analytical Harmony” and described as a “Detective of the Tenryou Commission”. We also hear from Kamisato Ayato about him: This announcement is perhaps surprising because new characters are usually revealed after an update goes live, but HoYoverse has suspended updates due to the ongoing lockdowns in China....

Electronic Arts and developer Motive Studio have been refreshingly frank with the development of the upcoming Dead Space remake. Rather then simply announcing the game and letting the silence swell, the duo has showcased a series of behind-the-scenes videos diving into the remake’s art, audio, and more. Now, it looks like the two are ready to show off the game for real. In less than 24 hours, we’ll get to see the first gameplay trailer for the Dead Space remake....

Today, the gigantic film-inspired kaiju multiplayer arena brawler Gigabash just got a brand new trailer. Alongside plenty of new action, the video also revealed that the game would be coming to console and PC in early 2022. Google detailed its plans to support Stadia in 2020, and these include the launch of ten exclusive games for the platform, to be revealed soon (via MCV/Develop). The company thanked its “earliest fans” for their feedback from November onwards, and assured that it is “work[ing] toward our long-term vision for the future of gaming” on an “evolving platform.” It detailed its milestones, such as the Chromecast Ultra update, the addition of Google Assistant and Achievements, and Stream Connect’s debut in Ghost Recon Breakpoint....

When the Google Stadia was initially announced in 2019, it was met with mixed reception, including that of surprise at Google’s decision to enter the gaming industry as well as some optimism and some trepidation.
