With the Kickstarter campaign for The Wonderful 101 Remastered being an absolute smash, PlatinumGames is looking to the future for this once bomb of a game. In an interview with Nintendo Everything, director Hideki Kamiya stated that he already had some ideas for how he’d potentially follow-up the original fan-favorite action game.
Speaking about the (then) impending Kickstarter, Kamiya said, “Back when we were making the Wii U original, I had a lot of hopes for the game before its release. I knew we made a really incredible game…I had ideas like, ‘Oh, what would it be like if we did a sequel where Wonder Blue was the leader?’ All of these creative and exciting ideas were flowing, and then the game released and I saw the numbers and was like, ‘Wait, what?!’”
Thankfully, this Kickstarter has not only succeeded beyond expectation, but will bring the game to Switch, PC, and PS4. New content is also being developed thanks to the generous contributions of fans the world over. It seems the cult status of The Wonderful 101 is going to expand by quite a bit when this new port releases.
Whether or not a sequel will happen is still up in the air. PlatinumGames head Atsushi Inaba told Nintendo Everything, “We always think about how we can expand on all our games. We want to revisit it [Wonderful 101] now because we’ve always felt it was a high-quality game that didn’t get a fair chance. In regards to a sequel or something, we can’t make one if there aren’t any fans for the series in the first place.”
It does seem likely that a continuation will occur. The crowdfunding campaign has already raised more money than the Wii U original earned in sales. Either through word of mouth or because of a lack of similar games in the current industry, people just really want to see The Wonderful 101 get a second chance. It absolutely deserves to have it, too.
Platinum’s titles may not be for everyone, but the company always puts passion into its projects. The Wonderful 101 was proof of that and it will hopefully continue to shine in this new port.
