Hasbro has big plans for Magic: The Gathering and D&D for 2020, especially in the digital realm.
If the latest earnings call from Hasbro is anything to judge, the gaming conglomerate is not just sitting by while oodles of cash comes rolling in from Magic and D&D. They’re reinvesting that cash in a digital initiative that will bear fruit with new games coming out in 2020.
Brian D. Goldner, Chairman of the Board and CEO at Hasbro, recently concluded the company’s fourth-quarter 2019 earnings call. One of the biggest takeaways was that Hasbro has “substantial” plans for digital gaming focused on both Dungeons & Dragons as well as Magic: The Gathering.
“Magic: The Gathering revenues increased more than 30% in the year, behind double-digit growth in tabletop play and a strong first year for Magic: The Gathering Arena,” said Goldner. “Dungeons & Dragons revenues grew for the sixth straight year, and we are meaningfully investing in both brands to drive engaging storytelling, while developing new digital games with high margin profitable growth longer term. We look forward to sharing our 2020 new gaming plans for Magic and D&D on February 21.”
We already know about quite a few games that Hasbro has under development. On the Magic side, Magic: Legends will bring a Diablo-style hack-and-slash action RPG under the Magic IP. The latest trailer revealed the game’s card-based combat, where the player casts powerful spells based on the cards they acquire during gameplay.
Magic: The Gathering Arena remains an ongoing concern for Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, while Magic: ManaStrike is a recent game released on mobile that turns Magic into a Clash Royale-style strategy game.
On the D&D side, Baldur’s Gate III is known to be in development with Larian Studios. The developer behind Divinity: Original Sin has announced that more news is due out in February, which mirrors what Hasbro is telling us now. There’s still lots we don’t know about Baldur’s Gate III and we’re all eager to find out how the latest entry in such a classic series will present itself in terms of gameplay.
Another Baldur’s Gate game, this time titled simply Dark Alliance, is also said to be in development. This game is more of an action RPG along the same lines as Magic: Legends, but beyond that, we have very little info.
We’ll get more on all these games and possibly more on February 21.
