Grand Theft Auto 5 was the UK’s best-selling game in January, according to data acquired by industry mag MCV. The PS4 version was the highest-selling SKU for the month, with the Xbox One version following behind.

Rockstar’s open-world hit managed to outsell Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and FIFA 15, despite aggressive price promotions on Activision’s shooter.

Far Cry 4, meanwhile, was the fourth best-selling game of the month, with Assassin’s Creed Unity finishing in fifth. There are no real surprises throughout the rest of the Top 40, although Microsoft will likely be disappointed with Halo: The Master Chief Collection’s performance, ending the month immediately behind last-gen adventure Assassin’s Creed Rogue and Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Overall software sales for the month are said to be 3.5 per cent down on 2014, although they reportedly generated 4.5 per cent more revenue. MCV attributes the revenue increase to the higher price of current-generation titles.

PS4 proved to be the most popular console with the UK, though, securing a 27.8 per cent share of overall software sales. Xbox One follows behind with 24.4 per cent.

Earlier this week Take-Two revealed that GTA 5 had shipped over 45 million units since launch, with almost 10 million of them sold on PS4 and Xbox One.
