GODSENT’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive roster will face off against staff members of esports data platform GRID in a charity showmatch, with the proceeds going towards a Swedish childhood cancer foundation. The Swedish esports organization partnered with GRID in November of last year, shortly after signing their current CS:GO lineup. Funds raised during the broadcast will benefit Swedish childhood cancer fund Barncancerfonden.
The event will pit GODSENT’s professional CS:GO team against GRID employees in a best-of-three match broadcasted on GRID’s Twitch channel. GODSENT’s CS:GO lineup features well-known names like Mikail “Maikelele” Bill, Martin “STYKO” Styk, and Kevin “kRYSTAL” Amend. Since taking up the GODSENT name, the team has won the WePlay! Forge of Masters Season 2 Finals and made the semi-finals of both DreamHack Open Winter and DreamHack Open Sevilla. They are currently ranked as the 23rd best CS:GO team in the world.
To even the playing field, the game will be altered by unconventional gameplay modifications like random money injections, substitutions, and mixed teams. The match will be commentated by Teo “oversiard” Siard and Keiran “Keiran” Cullinan, who have previously worked alongside each other in online Counter-Strike leagues United Masters League Season 2 and LOOT.BET Season 4.
Donations collected during the stream will be sent to Barncancerfonden, a Swedish childhood cancer fund. Barncancerfonden is the coordinating body of Sweden’s six regional childhood cancer associations. The company focuses their efforts on fighting childhood cancer, raising awareness, and ensuring the affected children and their families receive proper support. The organization funds childhood cancer research and provides support for affected families by funding peer support programs and consulting nurses at Swedish pediatric oncology centers. Funds raised are mostly allocated towards cancer research and training, while remaining fractions are spent on raising awareness, patient support, and administration.
Donations made during the broadcast will be shown on stream, with the accompanying messages being read live. GRID has already donated €500 ($558USD), and has pledged to match donations made during the first map up to a value of €1,000 ($1,116USD).
“The Swedish Childhood Cancer Fund are proud and thankful to be the charity receiver for this match arranged by Grid and Godsent,” says the Swedish Childhood Cancer Fund’s Project Manager of Events Nathalie Hillerström. “We quite recently decided to get involved in the booming esports world, as it is in line with our strategy to expand our sporting events and get in touch with a new target group. Hopefully this is just the beginning of our exciting journey within esports.”
“We are very proud to be part of this initiative in trying to contribute with what we can to a very important purpose,” says Ludwig Sandgren, CEO and co-founder of GODSENT. “Childhood should be about being with friends and playing games and if we can aid in helping raise money for children with cancer it is something absolutely worth doing and we hope that we will see more initiatives like this in esports in the future”
The GODSENT and GRID Barncancerfonden charity broadcast event is scheduled to take place on January 17th, 2020.
