One of the promised features for Google Stadia has finally been added to the service, as it’s now possible for players to earn achievements in their games. There’s just one caveat: they won’t be notified about them when playing on a mobile phone.

Google Stadia was originally promised to ship with lots of features, but it was revealed that some of them would be delayed until next year. The Stream Connect, State Share, Crowd Play, Google Assistant functionality, and family sharing were all pushed back to 2020, which means that their release will likely coincide with the launch of the free version of Google Stadia.

One of the delayed features has finally been added to Google Stadia. According to the Google Stadia Twitter page, it’s now possible to acquire achievements while playing games and to see them all within the user account. Google has been keeping track of the achievements that players have earned over the past month and these have been retroactively added to everyone’s accounts.

There is one drawback to the addition of achievements, as the player will only receive notifications about them when playing on a PC or television screen. The people who are playing Google Stadia on their mobile device will not be told whenever they unlock an achievement.

Google Stadia is hardly the first gaming platform that shipped with missing features, but many people were surprised by how limited the user interface was at launch. The fact that a mobile phone was needed to set up Google Stadia seemed like a bizarre requirement. A mobile phone was also needed to access the store and buy games at launch, though this has since been rectified. The initial launch window for Google Stadia has felt like an extended beta period that people have had to pay to take part in unless they were lucky enough to receive a Buddy Pass. The launch of the free version of Google Stadia is due to happen in 2020, but it’s still unclear if many of the promised features will be ready on time.
