Google Chrome’s latest update is, on paper, good news. After all, the Internet giant’s new policy on autoplaying videos for the browser means that while they will still fire up automatically on many sites, the sound has now been muted. That’s a good thing, right?
Well, it is, only there’s one small problem for those who like web-based games — it’s muted the sound on them, too.
This effectively renders a heap of web games unplayable, and suffice to say the creators are not having it. Bennett Foddy, the designer of popular titles such as Getting Over It, said the update is a ‘disaster for games and audio art on the web.’ Meanwhile, Sausage Roll maestro Stephen Lavelle noted that the audio in all of his HMTL-based games has been broken.
There’s currently no word from Google on the matter, so we have no idea if they are planning to fix the issue. The best designers have right now is a temporary workaround, although it’s hardly ideal.
Ah fuuck sake. I had just in the last year started to begin to trust that I could reliably use audio in the browser (after years of reticence). So much for that…looks like the chrome update broke all of the audio in my html5 games as well. https://t.co/gT6n9pz0VT
