After a drought of information regarding updates to its streaming platform, Google has finally announced some new games coming to Stadia this year. The list is a little small, but you’ve got to start somewhere. That somewhere begins with three “First on Stadia” releases with Lost Words: Beyond the Page, Spitlings, and Stacks on Stacks (on Stacks).

The other two titles include the upcoming Panzer Dragoon remake and the Serious Sam Collection. These last two won’t be exclusive for any period, though the second is notable for confirming the existence of such a package. The ESRB rated this compilation of Sam Stone’s adventures nearly two years ago and it is only now coming to light. It will include The First Encounter HD, The Second Encounter HD, 3: BFE, and the expansions released for Second Encounter and 3.

It’s honestly a sort of odd pairing of titles. Nothing seems bad (Lost Words is actually quite good from a short demo I played), but these games don’t really mesh together well. Google has gone so long without updating Stadia’s lineup and then it adds smaller indie titles most people haven’t heard of. That’s one way to garner interest in lesser-known games, but it does nothing to make Stadia seem like a must-own purchase.

Maybe that’s a harsh reading of this update, but Google should be doing more to improve the current state of Stadia. After a rocky launch and radio silence from the company, many were fearing Stadia might be dying off. With both Nvidia and Microsoft’s streaming services already offering better selections of games, what unique features does Stadia offer users?

Exclusive games will only go so far in getting people to sign-up. With how common day-one patches are and such, being able to play a game a week to a month early isn’t all that appealing. Locking away a title on Stadia also seems like a bad move for a smaller indie game that might get overlooked.

There’s really not a right answer to this dilemma, but at least Google isn’t abandoning Stadia just yet. With any luck, these five games are just the start of a busy year for the service.
