Season 2 of Netflix’s The Witcher television series is deep into filming, and Kristofer Hivju has now officially joined the cast. Hivju is a Norwegian actor best known for his role as Tormund Giantsbane in the HBO series Game of Thrones. Now Hivju will be joining the all-star cast, playing the role of Nivellen.

Redanian Intelligence has reported that the character was given the code name “Nigel” and was described as, “charismatic, witty and funny man.” The only character that appears to match “Nigel’s” description is the character Nivellen. The breakdown of the role also claims that the role is “physically demanding,” and “requires great emotional range,” which is not an uncommon requirement for the cast of The Witcher. The series of books and short stories were written by Andrzej Sapkowski and inspired several video games as well as the smash-hit Netflix series.

Unfortunately, Nivellen is not a known character within the games even though there are similar quests to his story. In the books, Nivellen is the main character of the story “A Grain of Truth,” where Nivellen is cursed by a priestess for being a “monster in man’s skin,” and that he would, “become a monster in monster’s skin.”

Due to the curse, Nivellen turns into a partial beast with a bear-like head and scares off everyone around him. He seeks the help of Geralt of Rivia to reverse the curse after a long sordid history of appearing as a monster. The story mimics that of the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast, but with a much darker, and iconically Witcher-like twist.

Netflix’s The Witcher season two is rumored to be released sometime in the spring of 2021 and is currently ranked as one of the top shows in the world right now. The great success of the series has upped sales of the latest game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and has also increased sales in the books as well.

Rumors of other cast members have yet to be confirmed as half of the internet is calling for Mark Hamill to play Vesemir, and even though it was rumored he was offered the role, it has yet to be fully verified. There was also a recent leak of the impeccable tape of Graham McTavish auditioning for the role of Dijkstra, but no further word as confirmed this potential cast member. Whether or not these actors join the next season of The Witcher is yet to be seen, but for now, fans have plenty of source material with the games and books to keep them occupied.
