During a podcasting session, BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk has gone on record saying that the Mass Effect universe will not go away after the release of Mass Effect 3, citing the franchise as a “valuable universe.”

Very exciting news for many gamers, I’m sure, myself included. I would hate to see this incredibly expansive world go to waste after the initial set of games have been completed.

In addition, Zeschuk confirmed the ability to import your character from Mass Effect 2 to Mass Effect 3 (and subsequently how your actions from the previous games will impact the world in the final chapter of the trilogy).

This is definitely one of the first games I’ve seen, in a single-player capacity, that allows the player to have such a huge impact on the story world. Not to exclude games like BioShock or GTA4, but the persistence of the story from one game to the last game is not an easy feat to accomplish on many fronts, and I’m very impressed by BioWare’s commitment to storytelling.

“…to the point where some of the decisions you made in 1 you’ll see the result in 3. It’s actually interestingly impactful in that folks who have stuck with the franchise the entire time, there will be stuff that you will feel is yours that you’ve created in that third iteration.”

Zeschuk also touched upon the sequel to Mass Effect, saying the length will be about one and a half times longer and that “there’s a lot more you can do, a lot more you should do.” And do those things I will, Dr. Zeschuk.

What are you most excited for in Mass Effect 2? Who would you like the spin-off titles to focus on?

Mass Effect 2 will arrive on January 26, 2010. Certainly one of the longest six days I’ve had to wait in awhile.
