Whoever said the Nintendo Switch couldn’t run the CryEngine? In a surprise release on Nintendo’s portable hybrid console, MY.GAMES free-to-player shooter Warface is now available to download. Originally launched on PC back in 2013, the game made its way to modern consoles in 2018 and is now finding a home on Switch.

Basically an amalgamation of every modern military shooter and its game types, Warface is a class-based shooter that offers a range of PvP and PvE modes. It’s been well supported by former developer Crytek over the years, though cross-play multiplayer hasn’t been implemented yet. Maybe this surprise launch will be the catalyst for doing so?

The Switch port is said to run at 30 FPS and 720p in docked mode with 540p support for handheld/tabletop modes. Gyro support for aiming, HD rumble, and even voice chat are also supported. Users won’t need to have an active subscription to Switch Online for multiplayer, though this follows with other free-to-play games on the platform.

Should you give this a go? That’s hard to say. The performance of this particular version seems pretty okay from the trailer, but there’s definitely better shooters available on the Switch. Doom has its full multiplayer suite available and you can even nab something like Warframe with a complete campaign mode.

The original release of Warface was plagued with indifference from users and critics alike. Even typing out the name, I’m surprised I remember what anyone is talking about. It’s so very nondescript and the art style conjures more memories of Crysis than anything. You could fool me into believing this was a long lost sequel -which makes sense considering the developer-.

Being a free-to-play game, there’s obviously microtransactions and grindy progression systems. Much like Blacklight: Retribution, players cannot outright buy weapons for their arsenals. Everything is on a rent basis, which definitely deflates matches after awhile. Sinking tens of hours to unlock a single weapon is never a fun feeling.

Still, free is free, and you don’t need an online subscription to try this. You could do far worse on the eShop than this, so I guess that’s something to keep in mind.
