MekTek, the developer that’s been pushing for a free port of MechWarrior 4, has given some bad news to the hopeful glimmers of gamers all around: the entire release of the PC game freebie is still in question, and may not happen at all.
Their last major hurdle for the free release was Microsoft, who have held up the project and have not announced anything official regarding whether they’re going to allow it or not. MekTek is left waiting for an answer, stating that “the Free Release is held up at Microsoft and it is unknown to us and our Studio when the Free Release will be given the final go ahead.”
The company is now accepting donations, because in order to meet the standard of working with Microsoft, they had to meet certain requirements, like paying for premium insurance:
To keep MechWarrior fans hopeful, the company has released a Mercenaries mod for MechWarrior 4, but gamers must have the main game itself in order to be able to do anything with it.
“We were forced to insure our Studio at a premium rate to meet the Microsoft standard. Our insurance policy is a one year lease and we are unable to tap out of this policy until next fall.”
As a guy who used to play MechWarrior all the time, I’m hoping that this release can happen - it’d be a great nostalgia trip. What do you think about MechWarrior 4? Would you download a free version?
